Hello, Cleveland State University community—

We’re excited to share a brighter, branded version of our newsletter with you this month (and all months moving forward)! Even with this new look and format, you can still expect the same concise and helpful updates from our team.

It’s really important that I recognize two people who otherwise work from “behind the scenes”:

  • For the last three years we’ve intentionally recruited a student who is studying graphic design and who is interested in working on our team. This year, Stephanie C. is our Peer Advisor whose talent we are tapping, and who is responsible for our new look (and my avatar!). Stephanie’s zest for creativity, eye for color and design, and out-of-the-box thinking has brought us not only this new format, but she’s also created the brand for our Job Search Boot Camp. She’s also been reliable tech—and human—support for our special events.

  • Stephanie works under the direction of Brianne Kistler, who is responsible for our strategic communications and all of our special and employer driven events. Brianne manages all of our high level communications strategies, ensuring we have a clear, compelling message for each of our audiences. Brianne has also shown she is not above any task, having carefully planned our social media posts, taken headshots of our Peer Advisors, and in the midst of a pandemic, became the resident expert in Zoom!

These two creative, thoughtful, inspired and fun women keep me on my toes, make important recommendations to our whole team, and differentiate our department in a meaningful way. THANKS Brianne and Stephanie!

And, thank you, campus partners, once again, for continuing to share our events and services with your students, and celebrate in our success stories. We are excited to continue to work with you to serve and challenge our students as they learn the tools, resources, and strategies for managing their own career and professional development.

Take good care!

No Walk-In Wednesday this week (11/11), as CSU will be observing Veteran’s Day.

Many CSU students served as Cleveland Foundation interns this summer and blogged about their meaningful experiences.

We enjoyed reading posts from interns Arianna, Jenna, Ann, Erica and Nahomy

Additionally, were very excited to see this special shout out from one student intern, Rachel:

[To apply] for this internship, I spent many hours working with Career Services at CSU to perfect my resume, statement of purpose, and my interviewing skills. Every step of the way I sought professional advice and looked for ways to improve my chances… When I sat down for the first interview, I nailed it because I had already practiced and worked through tons of my answers beforehand.

InternCLE logo. Gray square speech bubble outlined in green. Inside the speech bubble: The I in "Intern" is a mic. Underneath is a bold "CLE" behind a black Cleveland skyline.

Recently, I had the honor of chatting with Annette Kramer, founder of InternCLE. We talked about the value of a four year (liberal arts) degree, the tireless work we’ve done to prepare our students for life after graduation, and —you guessed it—the parallels between internships and broccoli.

I shared the thoughtful and quick pivots our team has taken to meet students and employers “where they are” during this pandemic and how our students have weathered the storm. Give it a listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts!

Please reach out to us—we want to hear how you are doing and how we can be of help to you! And continue to check our website for up to date information about how to contact us and to access our general resources.
