Welcome one and all to our Spring 2021 semester. And thank goodness.
A new year, a new semester and some new information for you here!
I wanted to draw your attention to Hire A Vike, our online job board powered by the software Handshake, which is the number one way college students find jobs. All public, 4-year institutions in Ohio use Handshake and the nationwide Handshake “community” includes 17 million students at over 1,000 colleges and universities—including 120+ minority-serving institutions. Our employer partners asked for it, so we got it! On this system, students can: update their profiles, upload their documents, search for internships and jobs, network with fellow students and review trust scores for employers. We need your help reminding students of this platform! They simply sign in with their CSU ID and password. For more info and the benefits of Handshake, click here.
Hat tip to our Assistant Director, Karen Lieske, a.k.a. The Sheriff. She has earned this nickname in our office precisely because of her sleuth-y diligence in researching employers, teasing out scammers and holding our employers to a higher standard. You may or may not be surprised to know that fraudulent postings continue to be shared in our system, and the tricksters get more and more sophisticated (insert: THUMBS DOWN). Thanks to Karen, we’re able to warn students to be discerning, to protect their accounts and to never, ever pay to obtain a job. If anything seems concerning, we ask The Sheriff!
DID YOU KNOW that Career Services staff approve or decline each job in Hire A Vike? To be posted in Hire A Vike, the position must be aligned with an academic program that is part of a four year degree. Further, these internship or job opportunities must provide meaningful experiences, and ensure the development of marketable skills and career competencies that provide for continued professional development and growth. Along with a new semester comes new opportunities! If students need assistance exploring interests and potential careers, are wondering what they can do with their major, are interested in applying for internships and jobs, or are in need of developing interpersonal skills or struggling to describe their strengths … please refer them to Career Services! Don’t forget: you can use the referral system in Starfish as well!
