FAQs FOR USING STAFFING AGENCIES

Q: What is a staffing agency?
A:
A staffing agency — also known as a search, recruiting or staffing firm or service — is an organization that matches companies and job candidates. By registering with a staffing agency, you have the potential to make connections with multiple hiring managers looking to find the right people for their job openings.

Q: How do you choose the right agency?
A:
It’s important to take time to learn about and research the staffing agency you’re interested in. Find out if it is a general staffing firm or a specialized staffing firm (one that targets specific industries). Be sure to clarify whether you want short-term, long-term, or temporary-to-permanent employment.

Look to see if the agency is part of the American Staffing Association. If they are, then they adhere practices that the American Staffing Association consider legal, ethical and professional.

Q: What are red flags that I should be on the lookout for?
A:
Never work with a staffing agency that doesn’t have clear guidelines, or is vague, about their placement processes, time sheet or pay roll. DO NOT PAY ANYONE FOR A JOB!

Q: What COVID-19 questions are staffing firms permitted to ask of candidates and new employees?
A:
 Staffing agencies can ask:

  • Whether a candidate has traveled to specific, high-risk areas.

  • Whether a candidate had a recent fever and/or other specific symptoms.

  • Whether a candidate tested positive for the virus.

  • Whether a candidate lives with, or has recently been around, someone who tested positive or is presently quarantined.

A staffing firm can refuse to place a worker who answers yes to any of these questions. It is a valid basis for temporarily denying access to the facility or refusing to place a worker on assignment.
